Amylin, Alkermes Win FDA Approval of Once-Weekly Diabetes Drug

Luke Timmerman1/27/12Leave a CommentFollow @ldtimmerman [Updated: 3:47 pm] Amylin Pharmaceuticals and Alkermes have gone to the FDA twice before to seek approval of their new diabetes drug, and been turned back, but now the persistence has paid off. The FDA has cleared their once-weekly injectable diabetes drug for sale in the U.S. San Diego-based Amylin (NASDAQ: AMLN) and Dublin- and Waltham, MA-based Alkermes (NASDAQ: ALKS) today won clearance to start selling exenatide once-weekly (Bydureon) in the U.S., according to a letter posted on the FDA website. The approval came after the agency held up the application twice before—first in March 2010, and again in October 2010, saying it needed further assurance that the drug doesn’t cause an irregular heart rhythm known as QT prolongation. The companies expressed confidence back in July that the issue had been resolved, based on results of an additional clinical trial. The drug won approval in Europe back in June. [Updated with added detail on Alkermes royalty] The long-awaited U.S. approval is vital to future of Amylin, as it started investing back in 2005 in a $500 million Ohio factory to mass-produce the new drug. Amylin’s fortunes have become even more tied to Bydureon since November, when longtime partner Eli Lilly bowed out of a collaboration to co-market the drug. Alkermes, which provided technology that made the drug last long enough in the bloodstream to turn it into a once-weekly injection, will pick up an 8 percent royalty on sales of the first 40 million units sold in a single year, and a 5.5 percent royalty once sales exceed 40 million units in a single calendar year. While there is competition from Novo Nordisk’s liraglutide (Victoza) as a once-daily injection for diabetes, and various other oral pills and injectable insulin, the new drug from Amylin and Alkermes is the first treatment that can be injected as little [...]

Kent’s Jobless Rate Drops to One of Lowest in Ohio

Kent’s unemployment rate dropped from 7.3 percent at the start of 2011 to 5.5 percent by year’s end, according to the most recent numbers from the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services. Kent’s 5.5 percent December unemployment rate put the city in a tie with Cleveland Heights, Westlake, Strongsville and Hilliard. The only cities of any size that are included in public ODJFS statistics to have a lower unemployment rate in Ohio were Dublin (4.7 percent,) Upper Arlington (4.9 percent), Westerville (5.1 percent), Gahanna (5.2 percent), Mason City (5.4 percent) and Shaker Heights (5.4 percent). Kent’s 2011 unemployment rate peaked at 8 percent in July, when 1,400 city residents were out of work. That number continued dropping each month until it hit the year’s low of 5.5 percent in November and December, when only 900 Kentites reported being unemployed. To see a month-by-month breakdown of Kent’s 2011 civilian labor force estimates, click this link. Among the state’s 88 counties, the December 2011 unemployment rates ranged from a low of 4.9 percent in Mercer County to a high of 14.3 percent in Pike County. Rates increased in 51 of the 88 counties. Portage County’s unemployment rate of 7.2 percent in December put it at spot 71 on the 88-county list, meaning only 17 Ohio counties had a lower rate. Portage had ended 2010 with a 9.3 percent unemployment rate. Five counties had unemployment rates below 6.0 percent in December. The counties with the lowest rates, other than Mercer were: Holmes, 5.1; Delaware, 5.3; Geauga 5.8; and Medina, 5.9 percent. Nine counties had unemployment rates above 11.0 percent during December. The counties with the highest rates, other than Pike, were: Ottawa, 13.3; Adams, 12.0; Meigs, 11.8; Morgan, 11.7; Scioto, 11.5; and Clinton, Noble, and Vinton, 11.1 percent. Ohio’s unemployment rate was [...]

Dublin is now European City of Science 2012

Dublin Lord Mayor Andrew Montague officially designated Dublin as European City of Science this morning at the Convention Centre Dublin. Prof Patrick Cunningham, chief scientific adviser to the Government, was one of the key people who led the bid to secure Dublin’s tenure as City of Science. It was in Strasburg in France in 2008 that Dublin was announced as the city to host the 2012 Euroscience Open Forum (ESOF), edging ahead of Vienna. Every two years, a European city holds the City of Science tenure. Turin was City of Science in 2010, while Barcelona held the mantle in 2008. So what will City of Science behold? The highlight of the year will be ESOF 2012 in July, when the world’s scientific community will be descending upon Dublin. In addition, ESOF will host the Europe – US Symposium on the Atlantic Ocean as a shared resource. There will also be more than 160 science-related events happening all over Ireland throughout the year. The setting itself was a colourful display this morning to showcase how the ‘year of science celebration’ will be all about an intersection between science and the arts. Theatre artists from Rough Magic Theatre Company gave an entertaining performance, while a harpist and a violinist from the RTÉ Symphony Orchestra also played two pieces. Dublin footballer Stephen Cluxton, who is also a science teacher, brought along some of his students to the event, while children from Gardiner Street Primary School checked out some of the interactive exhibits. Compéring the event, Irish comedian Dara O’Briain, who also has a degree in maths and theoretical physics, spoke about how Ireland was renowned for its rich artistic and literary heritage, but he said this year would be a great opportunity to show the links that exist between the arts and the [...]

Dublin to host conference on intelligent transport systems

The Irish Times – Saturday, January 28, 2012 TIM O’BRIEN DUBLIN HAS been chosen as the venue for a major conference that is expected to attract thousands of delegates working in technology-based road safety systems. The 2013 Intelligent Transport Systems conference is a key event for the designers of systems such as the eCall device which rings emergency services in the event of a crash. The system also provides potentially life-saving information on the speed of the vehicle at the time of the crash and current position. Other intelligent transport systems under development or already available include in-car breathalysers that prevent a vehicle from starting if the driver is “over the limit”. The conference, to be held in the Convention Centre, Dublin, in June is expected to attract several thousand delegates from across Europe, and the selection of Dublin is likely to be a major boost for the city, according to Minister of State for Transport Alan Kelly. Speaking yesterday, Mr Kelly said he believed developing such technologies offered a major opportunity for Ireland – both in terms of the businesses developing the technologies themselves and their application . “There is an app already developed for smartphones which will request a taxi and give your location,” he said. Further technological development could provide “space-sharing” on lorries across the island, which would offer savings in costs and carbon emissions. The National Roads Authority is currently rolling out variable messaging signs along motorways which advise drivers of travel times, weather conditions or likely diversions ahead. The authority is also expanding its range of information-gathering technologies on temperature and the conditions of roads. According to Mr Kelly, intelligent transport technologies also have implications for public transport with text or app-based requests for rural public transport services. “Smartcard ticketing and real-time passenger information systems [...]

Ireland may put IRA veteran on trial over laundering of North Korean-produced …

Edwards issued his follow-up statement one month after he rejected a 6-year-old U.S. extradition warrant for Garland. The judge explained that the alleged conspiracy was concocted in part on Irish soil, therefore Garland must stand trial in Ireland, not the United States. The judge also ordered Garland’s house deeds and €75,000 ($98,000) in bail money returned to him pending any Irish decision to charge him. In May 2005, a U.S. federal grand jury in Washington indicted Garland for allegedly dealing in North Korean “superdollars” — so called because of their exceptional high quality — and the U.S. Justice Department issued an international arrest warrant. American officials said Garland received two loads of fake $100 bills during two 1998 trips to Moscow, when Russian interior ministry police said they tailed him traveling in North Korean diplomatic-plated cars to the North Korean embassy. Garland admitted traveling to Moscow but has denied everything else. Officials in the Republic of Ireland took no immediate action following the American arrest demand. Instead, Garland was arrested during a rare 2005 foray into neighboring Northern Ireland, where British authorities traditionally are much more open to permitting a U.S. extradition. However, Garland in October 2005 persuaded a Belfast judge to grant him bail to visit his home near Dublin. Weeks later, his lawyers told that court he wouldn’t return. In 2009, Garland was arrested in Dublin on the basis of the same U.S. warrant. His extradition trial was delayed to mid-2011. Garland today remains national treasurer of the Workers Party, a fringe Marxist player in Irish politics linked to an Irish Republican Army faction called the Official IRA. Garland was seriously wounded during a botched IRA attack on a Northern Ireland border police station in 1957. Two colleagues were killed, and he was interned without trial in the [...]

Charity workers get pedalling towards three-day challenge

Staff from Marie Curie Cancer Care got into the saddle to raise awareness of a challenge to boost much-needed funds for the charity. Robbie McIntosh and Kate Stevenson took to their tandem ahead of the Edinburgh to Dublin Cycle Challenge, a 220-mile journey aiming to raise up to £100,000. The three-day event, which will take place in July, is open to everyone, and proceeds will help the organisation to provide essential support for people with terminal illnesses. Robbie McIntosh, Marie Curie Cancer Care events manager for Scotland, who will be taking part this summer, explained what the challenge involves. He said: “It’s a three-day cycle, so we’re going to spend the first day going down to the coast then over on the ferry for two more days cycling when we get to Ireland. “It’s going to be a very big event; we’re looking to have around 60 people doing it – anyone with a reasonable level of fitness can join in; anyone who wants a challenge and fancies cycling. There’s six months until the actual event so there’s lots of time to get yourself ready and take part in it. “It’s a fantastic event to do in two fantastic capitals, with beautiful countryside between them, all for an amazing cause.” Money raised will go towards services provided by Marie Curie around the UK, which involves a network of more than 2700 nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals caring for terminally ill patients in the community. As well as assisting people who choose to die at home, the charity also has nine hospices throughout the country, with one in Edinburgh, where in-patient care, social, spiritual and family support and bereavement support is on offer. Around 70 per cent of Marie Curie’s income comes from fundraising and donations, with the organisation required [...]

Mum wins €50k on Winning Streak …but her home burgled during show

A mum-of-four who scooped €50,000 on RTE’s Winning Streak show returned home with her cheque only to find her house had been ransacked and burgled. Susan Bransfield (48) got back from the RTE studios to her Longford home to find that it had been turned over while she was in Dublin. Shocked Susan said the brazen burglars had stolen her children’s Christmas presents as well as some of her prized possessions. The dance instructor thinks her home was targeted because it would be known she would be in Dublin for the show, and has now urged RTE to consider advising future contestants to make sure their homes are protected while they are in Montrose. “They even took all of the kids’ presents, including my son Conor’s 32-inch TV, his iPod and new earphones,” said Susan. It is believed the thieves robbed her home after they spotted her name and address being announced on the previous week’s show when the winners for the next week are announced. Susan said she considered making a quick stop at her home after filming before meeting with friends, but instead went straight to the celebrations at a local pub to watch her appearance on TV on Saturday January 14. Now she thinks that if she had gone home first she might have disturbed the burglars or prevented the break-in. Holiday Susan is now going about replacing some of the stolen items with her winnings. “I have got a TV for the little fella and we might go on a holiday in the summer and perhaps do a bit of DIY,” she said. “RTE should definitely consider advising people to make sure they have an alarm and that their houses are fully locked up and secure — or failing that to get a house-sitter,” said Susan. Billionaire Denis O’Brien Says Would Invest in Bank of Ireland

Enlarge image Irish Telecommunications and Media Billionaire Denis O’Brien Ramin Talie/Bloomberg Irish Telecommunications and Media Billionaire Denis O’Brien. Irish Telecommunications and Media Billionaire Denis O’Brien. Photographer: Ramin Talie/Bloomberg Jan. 27 (Bloomberg) — Irish billionaire Denis O’Brien, chairman of Digicel Group Ltd., talks about Ireland’s economic recovery and the country’s banking system. He speaks with Maryam Nemazee and Matt Miller on Bloomberg Television’s “On the Move” at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. (Source: Bloomberg) Denis O’Brien, the Irish telecommunications and media billionaire, said he would invest in Bank of Ireland Plc as the lender has “cleaned up its balance sheet.” “Bank of Ireland has taken the medicine,” O’Brien said in an interview with Bloomberg Television’s Maryam Nemazee today at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. While Irish banks have written down their assets to market values and been recapitalized, “other banks around Europe haven’t done a mark-to-market.” Irish taxpayers pumped about 62 billion euros ($81.5 billion) into the country’s largest six lenders, which have sold risky real-estate loans to the National Asset Management Agency, a so-called bad bank. At the same time, Prime Minister Enda Kenny, who said yesterday that “mad borrowing” lay behind the country’s crash, is cutting spending to narrow the deficit. “We have taken the cod-liver oil,” said O’Brien, ranked as Ireland’s wealthiest man in the 2011 Sunday Times Rich List. “Ireland is definitely on the turn.” Bank of Ireland shares fell 0.9 percent to 11.5 euro cents at 2:30 p.m. in Dublin. That’s still 15 percent higher than the 10-cent price at which the lender sold shares in July, and at which the government sold stock to five investors in October. Former Deputy Chairman Ireland has injected 4.7 billion euros into the lender since March 2009. The state cut its [...]

Grandview Yard’s location has been paramount in attracting tenants, patrons in …

By  Steve Wartenberg THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH Friday January 27, 2012 5:21 AM There are several ways to measure the success of Grandview Yard, the development rising from land once home to a huge Big Bear warehouse. There’s the occupancy rate of its hotel and office building, which are 72.8 percent and 80 percent, respectively, and the tax dollars generated for Grandview Heights, which total $388,464. And then there are the measures of success that can be counted by party platters and massages. “We expected a little more foot traffic at first,” said Bobby Oberschlake, general manager of the Jason’s Deli at Grandview Yard. That’s picked up steadily, month by month. Somewhat surprisingly, Oberschlake said, the deli’s catering business has skyrocketed and has more than made up for any weakness in the walk-in business. “We’re getting businesses from Downtown, like Nationwide and Huntington, and all the way up to Ohio State and from over on Dublin Road,” he said. The pace of massages also has muscled its way up steadily at Massage Envy. “We’ve seen a solid and steady increase,” said Jonathan Turner, co-owner of the business. “And we feel we’re just starting to tap into this market, and Grandview Yard will continue to grow and mature and become a destination site.” That is the goal of the site’s developer, Nationwide Realty Investors, which also built the Arena District in phases, just as it’s doing with Grandview Yard. Capitol Square Limited, the commercial real-estate arm of The Dispatch Printing Company, publisher of The Dispatch, owns a 20 percent stake in Grandview Yard. The 100-acre site recently grew when Nationwide paid $6.6 million for a 7-acre parcel northeast of the 3rd Avenue and Edgehill Road intersection, which contains warehouse and retail space. The first phase of Grandview Yard opened in September 2010 [...]

Starbucks Planning Renovation To Madison Store

The Starbucks Coffee shop at the CVS plaza in downtown Madison at 613 Boston Post Road will undergo renovations, scheduled to begin sometime in mid-March. Brian Lorenz, of WD Partners, a design firm from Dublin, Ohio, presented plans at a recent Planning Zoning Commission meeting that called for one less seat inside and an additional nine outside. So seating inside would go from 20 to 19, and seating outside would go from 29 to 38. Lorenz said the renovations would include additional improvemens to the patio area, including bench seating, and new tables and chairs. “All of the furniture will be switche, there will be new trash receptacles and pots, and new decorative planters,” he said. The store also plans to put a new sign outside.  Modifications to the inside will include some remodeling and the installation of new equipment, Lorenz said. Terry Macy, a member of the Planning Zoning Commission, asked whether there was sufficient parking at the plaza to accomodate the net gain in customers, a subject that was then debated by other members of the commission.  Commissioner member Ron Clark, with a Starbucks Coffee cup parked prominently in front of him during deliberations, noted that he was a big fan of the coffee shop. “I’ve been known to go to Starbucks,” he said. “But not to the point where I’m convinced I should have to recuse myself.” He said that “94 percent of the time” he is able to find parking easily. But he, and the other members of the commission, agreed that some additional direction in the parking, when it comes to traffic patterns, would be  good thing. This could be done by painting arrows, among other measures, town officials said. Clark said the parking lot is popular with many area residents. “In the early [...]

Review: ‘Albert Nobbs’

Albert Nobbs is a waiter in a reputable hotel in 19th-century Dublin, an impeccable servant saving up his money and keeping to himself, working hard to avoid the poverty so prevalent to Ireland in that era. That Albert has done so for almost 20 years at the hotel is impressive. It is a testament to his work ethic that customers trust Albert and seek him out to take care of them during their stay. That this loyal servant has hidden the fact that Albert is actually a woman is amazing. It shows the lengths to which a woman with no other financial means will go to preserve her little place in society without having to depend on a man. Or a woman, for that matter. “Albert Nobbs” is based on a short story that was adapted into an off-Broadway play. It was Glenn Close’s first taste of renown, as she won an Obie award for her 1982 performance. She has said the role has stayed with her for 30 years, to the point that she saw Albert as a role that she must play before she dies. That kind of great story from one of our great performers – her selection as one of the five best actress candidates this week was her sixth Oscar nomination – makes me wish that “Albert Nobbs” was a great movie. The real shame is that Close is the problem. It’s not easy to watch as Albert goes through the daily charade of donning formal wear for dinner. It’s even harder to watch Close, who in character doesn’t look like a man, and who expresses a male voice by affecting a ludicrously deep voice. It’s something like a child might produce in doing an imitation of his or her father. I often thought while [...]

Dublin offers valuable data to help businesses

The Irish Times – Friday, January 27, 2012 DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL: IT IS ESTIMATED that public sector bodies across the EU are sitting on a treasure trove worth up to €27 billion in the form of the data they hold on a variety of areas including planning, traffic and transport and environmental protection.  In an initiative led by Dublin City Council, Dublin’s four local authorities have come together to form Dublinked – a membership network involving businesses, technologists, app developers, researchers and entrepreneurs to mine, exploit and utilise public data to generate new revenue streams and address regional challenges. The Dublinked initiative sees previously unreleased public operational data being made available online for others to research or reuse. The information is curated by NUI Maynooth to ensure ideas can be commercialised as easily as possible and to minimise legal or technical barriers that can be impediments for small and medium businesses (SMEs) seeking to develop and prove business ideas. “We started looking at this about two years ago and everyone said we couldn’t do it,” says assistant Dublin city manager Michael Stubbs. “We said we wanted to do it and we decided to find a way around the problems. We were told that we would be giving unfair competitive advantage to the private sector by allowing it access to this data – but we are allowing everyone access to it so there is no unfair advantage. The whole point is to stimulate economic activity thereby creating jobs.” The initial release of data in October consisted of over 100 environmental, traffic and planning datasets, including planning application data from across the Dublin region: water flow, rainfall and energy monitoring; air, water pollution and noise maps; a wide array of usable mapping from development plans, river catchment and drainage; and parking, residential and [...]

The soldiers persecuted for daring to help Britain fight Hitler
